Well here we are, the probable end of 20th Century Fox’s X Men franchise now that Disney has gobbled up another massive studio. It’s been a franchise with more ups and downs than a ruddy pogo stick. After an okay original trilogy First Class indicated a fresh start helmed by the fantastic pairing of James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender and Days of Future Past gave creators license to ignore previous timelines. But really since then it’s been downhill for the main films.
Deadpool 1 and 2 brought a fresh exciting take while the stand alone Logan was amazing. However Dark Phoenix insures that the franchise goes out with a whimper.
The problem has remained the same since First Class because while McAvoy and Fassbender are both brilliant actors playing two of the most interesting comic book characters ever. More often than not they are surrounded by bad storylines and bad actors. Days of Future Past being the exception obviously.
Sophie Turner is the low point for me. I’ve never really been a fan of her in Game of Thrones and when she turned up as Jean Grey in X Men Apocalypse I outwardly groaned. Now the script doesn’t help her out admittedly, meandering pointlessly and lazily towards nothing but I just don’t see her as a good Jean Grey. Actually I’ll be honest, other than Evan Peters as Quicksilver I don’t really enjoy that much of the newer cast.
Jessica Chastain’s role in the film, might be an accurate comic book adaptation (I have no idea to be honest) but here it muddies the water and wastes time when the film could and should be focusing on better things.
The worst thing about Dark Phoenix is that the much dismissed ending to the original trilogy did this storyline better. This version of the saga isn’t outright terrible but it’s not good either and quite frankly, kind of dull. There’s too much talking and not enough…things actually happening of interest. It isn’t really worth your time. Especially as it’s the end of this version of the franchise.
Verdict: Thumbs Down
Also and I have to mention this as it made me roll my eyes out of their sockets. There is a moment early on in the film in which Mystique says to Professor X that he should consider changing the name to X Women as they do all the work and save everyone all the time. However in LITERALLY THE PREVIOUS SCENE Quicksilver and Nightcrawler save pretty much everyone and Jean Grey only steps in at the last second. Meanwhile Mystique does squat all!
