Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down? Simple, spoiler free reviews.

(Cock) Blockers is a very funny and yet endearing comedy film starring Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz, John Cena with Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Gideon Adlon. The film follows three high school seniors who make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night. However Lisa, Mitchell and Hunter are three overprotective parents who panic when they find out about their daughters’ plans. They agree to join forces on a mission to ‘cock-block’ and stop the girls from sealing the deal.

Teen sex comedies can be very hit and miss, mostly miss, but this film worked for me. It had me smiling, chuckling and laughing out loud for the whole time even when it moves from absurd to downright bonkers at times.

The reason this film works so well is because the cast all work brilliantly together. Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan and Gideon Adlon are really fun and full of life as the three friends, who just want to have the night of their lives and maybe get laid along the way. They have great chemistry, as do our three leads.

Mann and Barinholtz are comedy veterans but WWE’s John Cena holds his own too, with three strong performances. The trio work really well together bouncing from mad plot to gross out humour, to genuine loving moment and back to bizarre scenarios. They did it all and they did it all well. The trio are all deluded and loving, in their own ways. Taking turns to be the slightly mad one. Mann is the clingy one, Barinholtz the failure while Cena plays against type as a giant muscled emotional wreck.

John Cena is following in the footsteps of fellow WWE legend (That’s right, legend, whether you like him as a wrestler or not doesn’t matter as his status cannot be denied) Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson into the movie business and I think it’s great. He oozes charisma and has comedy chops to match. It might take a little while, but I think he’ll be massive. All I’m saying is one day in the near future we’re going to have a film that stars both Cena Johnson and it’ll probably be the greatest film of all time and Hollywood will just give up and shut down soon after the fact.

Verdict: Thumbs Up
