Tomb Raider is a 2018 reboot of the action adventure franchise, it is based on the 2013 video game of the same name, which itself was a reboot of the Tomb Raider film series. The film stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, the independent daughter of an adventurer who vanished years earlier. Hoping to solve the mystery of her father’s disappearance, she embarks on a journey to find out what happened to him. Her adventure takes her to a tomb on a mythical island. Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, and Kristin Scott Thomas appear in supporting roles.

You can tell that this is a movie reboot of the new games straight away and to be fair, from the little I’ve played of those games it does appear to be a dead ringer. It’s completely different from the original Angelina Jolie versions but that doesn’t actually mean it will be a good film. Personally I felt there was too much focus on surviving and not enough focus on tomb raiding. Speaking of which, how many times I am expected to watch someone survive a fall that would blatantly kill them? Time and again you watch Lara survive the impossible and it very quickly creates a disconnect from the viewer and makes it a rather dull film. I don’t get it, you’re trying to make a gritty grounded reboot and then you make your heroes take bumps that would paralyse them at the best yet they shake it off in less than three minutes!

The main problem I had with this film is that Lara is actually quite a boring character. She’s smart and tough (to an unbelievable level) but bland and not particularly likeable. To be frank, she’s boring. And you have no real reason to root for her, sure she wants to find her dad but can we just stop and ask why in every single film Lara has daddy issues? Why does she keep losing them? Honestly be more careful. Also, have you ever noticed that in every Tomb Raider film Lara tries to save the world by leading the bad guys (who previously had no hope in finding anything) straight to the evil thing? Just stop looking for things and they’ll never find it! Stay away for Christ sake!

At least Alica Vikander puts in an ‘okay’ performance with what she is given, which isn’t much. I imagine her instructions were little more than ‘hang from this, fall from that’ on repeat. Unfortunately she’s surrounded by lazy acting for one-dimensional characters. I’m not expecting Shakespeare but come on..

Overall I probably had more fun with the Angelina Jolie versions, even if they are incredibly bad films but at least we didn’t have to watch Lara punch a shark this time around. So, there is that! the problem is we’ve gone from too dumb to far too serious and when dumb things take themselves too seriously, you’ve got a problem.

Not enough Tomb Raiding and too much surviving the impossible, coupled with an uninspired origin story and an ending that tries WAY to hard to set up a sequel, leaves me with no choice but to give this movie a thumbs down.

Verdict: Thumbs Down
