After years of humiliation and failed attempts to win the coveted Pirate of the Year Award, Pirate Captain and his oddball crew take on the cream of the pirating crop once more- Black Bellamy, Peg Leg Hastings and Cutlass Liz – in a race to pillage the most booty. They soon cross paths with lovelorn scientist Charles Darwin, who persuades the Captain that the crew’s prized ‘parrot’, Polly, could be the answer to the ‘untold riches’ they are searching for.

00001317The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! or The Pirates! Band of Misfits as it was released in North America, Australia and New Zealand (for whatever reason) is a 2012 film produced by Aardman Animations in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation. It was directed by Peter Lord and stars the voices of Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, Imelda Staunton, David Tennant, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Lenny Henry and Brian Blessed.

As you would expect from Aardman, this is another stop motion animated comedy film, after all they made Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit. Pirates! however, this time has added ‘swashbuckling’, which I think is brilliant. The film is loosely based on the first book from Gideon Defoe’s The Pirates! series, also named The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists.

The stop motion animation is gorgeous. There is something just so very charming about claymation in general, but Aardman do it so much better than anyone else. Every scene is crammed full of extra details. Sight gags, silly signs and just absurd amounts of detail.

I really enjoy this film, I think it’s great. I think it’s great for kids, adults…the whole family. Even your cat will enjoy it. It’s funny, it’s quick paced and it’s really quite clever in places too. In summary it’s pretty much everything you’ve come to expect from Aardman. It’s another, quite British, gem.

In my opinion it’s a perfect ‘holiday’ movie. Which holiday you ask? It doesn’t matter. Which ever one you sit around watching films with your family and just want to relax and be entertained. Granny will enjoy, little Timmy will enjoy it. It’s enjoyable. I highly recommend it.

Verdict: Thumbs Up
