Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down?
Alter Bridge are an American rock band who formed back in 2004. They consist of lead vocalist and guitarist Myles Kennedy, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips. They also happen to be one of my favourite bands of all time. The Last Hero is their fifth studio album and was released October 7, 2016. The album name comes from people feeling of disillusionment with current leaders but also references race relations, campaigns, current affairs and of course heroes, which is perfect for the upcoming American election, the UK who are mid ‘Brexit’ and general distrust throughout the rest of the world.
This album sounds epic, I know I know. It’s a word too often thrown around these days but I absolute mean it. This album is huge, tonally, lyrically and thematically it just has an incredible presence. It’s also heavier, darker and purposefully relentless. Tremonti’s solo work is clearly shining through more than ever. Don’t think it strays too far from what listeners expect though. This is an Alter Bridge record like we’ve come to expect and love. As always Tremonti’s guitar work is amazing and Kennedy’s vocal performance is, well…it’s Myles Kennedy for Christ sake. He’s awesome.. They’re both so gosh darn talented, but don’t think for a second that Brian Marshal and Scott Phillips don’t hold their own as the rhythm section too.
My Champion is currently my favourite track on the record. It’s probably the most ‘classic sounding’ song by them. It’s warmer and more relaxed as well as being catchy as hell and a great sing along. Other highlights are Show Me A Leader and Crows On A Wire but the whole album sounds fantastic.
While The Last Hero isn’t AB’s best album. What it is, is another brilliant record that in my opinion, much like their others, is a must have for any hard rock fan. After all I’ve only listened to this album a few times now and I already enjoy it, but imagine how much I will love it in a few more weeks. I’m seeing Alter Bridge live for the second time at Wembley Arena in November and I cannot wait!
