Boy they come around quick don’t they?! It’s already time for another WWE PPV. No Mercy is Smackdowns turn once again. After the critical success of Backlash and despite it being followed by a mildly decent, even if nothing changed Clash of Champions. I’m looking forward to this next outing.
WWE have got to keep the tempo and intrigue high for these shows though. They can’t be seen to have too many shows like Clash of Champions where nothing really note worthy happens. No, I still don’t count Reigns winning. Otherwise people will skip the smaller shows, rendering them pointless.
Anyway, without any further waffling let’s get to those predictions!
Nikki Bella vs. Carmella
I’ll admit that I haven’t been paying too much attention to this second tier women’s feud. I know Carmella turned heel and has picked up one or two sneaky wins. That’s pretty much it though.
So for this prediction, I’m just thinking that it would be nice for Nikki to help get Carmella, who does seem to be struggling slightly alone on the main roster. I’m also thinking that based on my later predictions for this show, I don’t think both female faces will win and I think it’s far more likely for Becky to retain, so Nikki has to do the job here tonight.
Don’t worry, I’m sure she’ll win the feud long term.
Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt
Look how far you continue to fall. I once had so much hope for you, but feud by feud it’s chipped away. You’re all bark and no bite, meaning your bark loses meaning every time. Based on previous booking I can only see Randy Orton winning this. Which is a bit boring. I really hope that one day Bray will be able to win a big feud like he failed with Cena, Reigns…The Undertaker.
Maybe this IS his time though, after all Randy Orton has had the upper hand pretty much all feud. Refusing to be intimidated. He even cost Wyatt a match against Kane at Backlash when he wasn’t fit to compete. Stopping any potential momentum he could have built up…
You know what? Screw it! Bray Wyatt is going to win! I’m calling it now!
Winner: Bray Wyatt (but actually Randy Orton)
Smackdown Tag Titles: Heath Slater and Rhyno (c) vs. The Usos
As much as I’d love to see an upset with Slater and Rhyno keeping the belts. I can’t actually see it happening. The Usos, who are suddenly doing interesting work again following their heel turn will no doubt take the titles from them, ending the fairytale story of how Heath Slater got a job. It does make sense, there isn’t much further Slater and Rhyno can go and having the titles of The Usos means American Alpha can ultimately defeat them, getting their revenge for chad Gables injury.
Winner: The Usos
IC Title vs. Career: The Miz (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler
Who would have thought at the start of the year that The Miz and Dolph Ziggler would have one of the best feuds in WWE right now. I’ve always liked both men, but I’ll admit to losing faith in Ziggler over the last few years. Bad booking will always have that effect eventually. It’s great to see Miz back on top form though, I can honestly say he hasn’t been this entertaining since his US title run prior to winning the WWE Title. Turns out the brand split might not be as bad I said it would be.
Now normally when there is a career on the line, it telegraphs the finish somewhat. However, there’s something about this situation that is making me believe, even just a little bit, that this might be Doplh Ziggler’s last match. If it isn’t and the plan is for him to win, then good job WWE for making me doubt myself. Maybe it’s just that I’m really enjoying The Miz’s run with Maryse and don’t want to see it end just yet. Maybe it’s because I can see why, after years of awful booking, Dolph would decide to leave. Either way though, the way this feud has been built up. With the emotions and storytelling being fantastic I think I’ll be happy with either result. I’m going to stick with The Miz as my prediction, even if deep down, I don’t expect it.
Winner: The Miz (but probably Dolph Ziggler)
Smackdown Women’s Title: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Alexa Bliss
I ‘might’ have already given away who I thought was going to win this one, based on my comments for Nikki Bella vs. Carmella. So I guess I’ll just spell it out. Becky Lynch retains.
I think it’s the right thing to do for a new title. It’s also the right thing to do for Becky, she deserves a little bit of a run on top. Alexa Bliss can win the title down the line and that’s fine. What’s more important is having great matches and bring a bit of prestige to the belt. Make it look and feel important. That way the fans will continue to care about not only ‘it’ but the women fighting over it as well. It’s simple really. Plus, with the Raw Women’s Championship being changed quite frequently. It doesn’t make sense to do the same thing on Smackdown.
As for putting on a great match, I’m confident that these two talented ladies will do just that.
Winner: Becky Lynch
WWE Title: AJ Styles (c) vs. Dean Ambrose vs. John Cena
If The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler isn’t match of the night, then my money would be on this one. AJ Styles as we all know is fantastic. John Cena is getting better with age (mainly because the quality of his matches has gone through the roof and he doesn’t win every single one). Dean Ambrose is the weak link here, it hurts me to say that. It really does.
Much like with the Women’s Title, I think a title change would be far too early. AJ can (and should be allowed) to run with this ball for as long as possible. Meanwhile, Dean needs a character fix before he wins it again (with all his ‘wackiness’ he’s lost his edge) and the story of John Cena chasing Ric Flair’s record is fantastic and should just be gifted away. It’s the final chance for that potential ‘heel turn’ as well, not that I think it will come.
If I was booking it, I’d have Styles hold the title until Wrestlemania with him frustrating Cena at every turn. Then at Wrestlemania I’d go for the elusive double turn with Cena doing ‘anything’ to win. It pretty much books itself.
For No Mercy however, it’s all about AJ Styles proving why everyone thinks he’s just so damn good. Phenomenal you might say.
Winner: AJ Styles
