Black Stone Cherry – Kentucky [Album Review]

I consider myself to be a pretty big fan of Black Stone Cherry, I’ve loved their music for a while now. I even saw them before Christmas at Wembley Arena in an excellent show. I thought their previous album Magic Mountain was fantastic and had been chomping at the bit in anticipation for the next record.

However, the first two tracks I heard from Kentucky didn’t set my world on fire. In fact, if anything they put it out. To me The Way Of The Future is just as poor as it is generic and as for The Rambler, it didn’t make me feel a thing. To say I was concerned was an understatement. I intentionally put off buying this album because I didn’t want to have a negative view on something produced by one of my favourite bands.

So I’ve owned the album for about two weeks now, I’ve had it in my car most of that time trying to get a feel for it. What do I think? Well, straight of the bat not a single song is as good as anything for Magic Mountain. Every song feels to me like a ‘B’ side or a filler track left off of a previous album. It’s the very definition of ‘alright at best’.

I was hoping it would prove to be a grower and in a way it was, I don’t hate it like my initial reaction. However I still don’t like the previously mentioned tracks. In Our Dreams is also rather poor and the cover of War was unnecessary. It adds nothing to the album, so why cover it? I will admit to not being a fan of the original though.

From what I’ve seen of fan responses though, I seem to be in the minority. So I guess there are Black Stone Cherry fans out there who find this their cup of tea. Unfortunately it’s not really mine. If it came on shuffle I wouldn’t skip most of the tracks sure, but I’d be wishing I was listening to their previous material for sure.

Verdict: Thumbs Down.
