Captain America: Civil War [Movie Review]

Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down? Simple, spoiler free reviews.

Political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability when the actions of the Avengers lead to collateral damage. The new status quo deeply divides members of the team. Steve Rogers (Captain America) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference while Tony Stark (Iron Man) sharply disagrees and supports oversight.

It’s another Marvel film that’s a whole lot of fun to watch and that right their folks, is the key thing. Do I recommend it? Obviously. If you’ve enjoyed other Marvel films, you’ll enjoy this one.

I’ve read the comic book version of Civil War and I was incredibly excited to see it brought to the big screen. Obviously they couldn’t stick to a word for word remake of the comic as the two universes are so different. So it was really a case of taking the main themes and running with them.

Civil_War_Final_PosterIt works, for the most part. If I was going to be negative you could criticise the movie for being more of a ‘disagreement and misunderstanding’ rather than a civil war. If one or more characters had sat down and had a chit chat before hand, half of the conflict could have been avoided! Silly buggers.

As always there’s a good balance of humour and action, something you’d come to expect considering the characters involved. After all, Ant-Man, Iron Man and Spiderman are all known for having a smart mouth and wit to match their superpowers.

Speaking of Spiderman, Tom Holland was pretty great as Peter Parker and again, he had the wit and sense of humour in the costume. It’s just a shame that while the character was lots of fun, he does stand out as incredibly CGI. Which is weird considering how much you see in the film, for one thing to stand out like a saw thumb is a little odd. A minor complaint and certainly doesn’t ruin the film however.

It is odd though, that for a story to have so many consequences in the comics to have so few in the movie universe. Everything is very fixable by the end of the film. I do feel like they could have done more to up the anti and make this huge event mean something more.

I can’t say much more without going into spoilers so I won’t, watch it yourself and you’ll know what I mean though. At the end of the day, great film. A must watch for any Marvel fan.

Verdict: Thumbs Up
