Dredd [Movie Review]

Thumbs up or thumbs down? Simple. Spoiler free reviews. Keep it simple dummy.mv5bodkyndqzmzuzof5bml5banbnxkftztcwodyymdeyoa-_v1_sx214_al_

Mega-City One, a vast, violent metropolis in which where criminals rule the streets, running from Boston to Washington DC surrounded by an irradiated waste land. The only force of order lies with the Judges who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and executioner. Known and feared throughout the city is Judge Dredd is challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo”. Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson, a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. They go to a neighbourhood where Judges rarely dare to venture – a 200 storey vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma and her ruthless clan.

Dredd holds the distinction of being the only film I’ve seen in 3D in which the 3D has added to my enjoyment of the film. The slow motion sequences were beautiful to watch in the cinema. I’m a big fan of the Judge Dredd graphic novels, in my opinion this movie is as close to those as you can get. It’s a million times better than the incredibly campy 1995 film starring Sylvester Stallone.

The Banner Saga [Game Review]

the-banner-saga-11Set in a world inspired by Norse mythology and viking culture, The Banner Saga is a a tactical role-playing game develop by Stoic. It was released as a single-player campaign, the first of a projected trilogy.

Stoic have done a great job at creating a fascinating world to walk through. Although you learn very little it feels like everything has its own story to tell, even if some are only hinted at in this first game. I’d love to know more about the stories, heroes and mythology in this universe. Which is something we’ll hopefully be seeing in the next two games.

Guardians of the Galaxy [Film Review]

Thumbs up or thumbs down? Simple. Spoiler free reviews. Keep it simple dummy.

guardians-of-the-galaxy-poster-star-lordAfter stealing a mysterious orb in the far reaches of outer space, Peter Quill from Earth, is now the main target of a manhunt led Ronan the Accuser. To help fight Ronan and his team and save the galaxy from his power, Quill creates a team of intergalactic criminals who are forced to work together in order to stop a fanatical warrior from taking control of the universe. They will become known as the “Guardians of the Galaxy”.

I didn’t know anything about Guardians of the Galaxy before this came out, but just like with a lot of people, it’s now one of my favourite Marvel properties.

What I can tell you now is that it was directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana, who are all brilliant in their respective roles. It also has an excellent soundtrack featuring songs from the 70’s and 80’s. In fact in August 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 reached the top of the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first soundtrack album in history consisting entirely of previously released songs to top the chart.

Pirate Radio

My Old Band

It’s not often I do a post just about me. It’s normally my opinion on something or complaining about this, that and the other. But I felt like doing one today.

A few years ago I used to play the drums in a band called Pirate Radio. I know, I know it’s not the most original band name in the world but it doesn’t matter. Anyway I was with this band for around a year and a half, it was a lot of fun but unfortunately my job kept getting in the way of playing gigs so I ended up having to leave. It was a shame and for a while I was pretty bitter about it.

These days the rest of the band has long since disbanded and moved onto other projects, but you can still find our old demo EP Drive The Rain online. Now that time has passed though I can look back again on the songs we wrote and enjoy them for what they are. Good rock songs.

I know, I know I’m banging my own drums here about something that I’ve done but I genuinely feel that way. Don’t just take my bias opinion of them though! I’ve built a playlist using the old reverb nation account of all the songs that I played on so that you can listen as well.

I hope you like them as much as I do.

Raw Talk [25/01/16]

On the back of an awesome Royal Rumble PPV comes Monday Night Raw live from Miami, Florida. It’s weird as a wrestling fan these days to be looking forward to a show rather than the skepticism and regret. You can argue that WWE television has slowly been improving over the last month or two anyway, but now that it’s officially Wrestlemania session I expect WWE to up their game and give it their all.

150_raw_01252016ca_1951-2256842185Normally when I review Raw I discuss The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, however I’m going to switch it up this week. Stay positive, Think happy thoughts and focus on The Good.

Sure, I could go on and on about The Authority opening the show (yawn) or how annoying it is seeing Kevin Owens Vs Dolph Ziggler yet again. I could even go on a rant about how pointless Kane is these days or how sad I am about how far Rusev has fallen in the past year. Yet when you’ve got plus points that include AJ Styles and The Roc, I can forget about those things for a while. So here we are my three favourite things from Monday Night Raw.

The Good

Chris Jericho Vs AJ Styles

tumblr_inline_o1jdc2wpjf1s4kk59_540How can you have a list of good points and not include AJ Styles. It’s still incredibly surreal seeing him inside a WWE ring after all this years, one that it might take a bit of getting use too. I’m just happy to see someone with as much talent as he has finally make it to the ‘big leagues’. More specifically though, I’m delighted he didn’t go back to TNA. Styles gets another big reaction from the crowd on Raw, they even chant his name during The Authority’s opening promo.

069_raw_01252016ca_0991-2326677724His first match on Raw is with Chris Jericho. This is what dreams are made of folks! Jericho is a legend in wrestling, famous around the world, and I know I’ve been frustrated with his recent run but this is a fantasy booking dream match. It must have been pretty special for AJ as well. Styles has wrestled some of the most talented people in the business, but going one on one with Jericho in a WWE ring must have been on his bucket list. It would certainly be on mine. During his entrance AJ shouts that “this is where he belongs”. You’re God damn right it is!

073_raw_01252016rf_0696-354701643One minor criticism, if you can call it that is hearing JBL call AJ Styles a kid, when he actually wrestled for WCW, is really weird. He might be new here, but his a veteran who’s respected around the globe.

It’s starting to look more and more likely that Chris Jericho will be turning heel as well, which is great news. He’s always been at his best as a heel and his current run is certainly lacking. I’m thinking once he does he’ll feud with Dean Ambrose over the Intercontinental Championship at Wrestlemania. Which should be awesome.

Divas Triple Threat?

116_raw_01252016ca_1424-468437524Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch faced off on Raw and it was a pretty solid match until Charlotte interfered and took out both women. Revenge on Sasha for the Royal Rumble and continued decent into her new heel character. One huge plus point this match had was that Sasha Banks came out alone. I hope this means it’s the end of Team B.A.D or at least her involvement with them, she’s good enough to go alone and was only being held back.

Banks has neatly added herself into the best booked feud on the main roster. Which I think is heading towards a Triple Threat match at Wrestlemania or at least Fastlane. Personally I’d save it for ‘Mania though. WWE do need to be careful with Becky Lynch here though, we don’t want her to become the forgotten third person again.

One question though. How is it that the former NXT women can be booked so well (granted it took a while to get the ball rolling) with the best built feud on the roster. Yet the other ‘divas’ are still struggling with throw away three minute tag team matches. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad they’re focusing on them but can you not multitask WWE?

The Rock

The Rock is back! Hell Yeah! The Miami crowd go crazy for the hometown hero. Rocky proceeds to cut an amazing promo. It starts with him interuppting The Miz, upsetting the Big Show, flirting with Lana much to the annoyance of Rusev. Every conversation and confrontation is hilarious. He’s even come up with a new catchphrase “You alright!”.

tumblr_o1jjvfej291saykaxo1_400The fun continues as The Rock makes his entrance to the ring. He talks to some cosplayers, dressed as Macho Man and Hulk Hogan, who just got moved from the hard camera. Vince must be pulling his hair out, but Rock can do what he wants and goes on as long as he wants at this point. In what must be the least PG anything on WWE television Rocky talks about weed and llama penises just to name a few. Again, The Rock can get away with anything. If Adam Rose cut this promo he’d be fired before he got backstage.

tumblr_o1jjvfej291saykaxo2_400New Day join in the fun, which is amazing as well. I love The New Day so much. The Usos get involved too and we get a rock bottom and a peoples elbow. Great stuff and the crowd are very happy.

This was without any doubt the best promo Raw has seen in years. The Rock and The New Day were on point. i’ll even forgive the involvement of The Usos. When Rock is good, he’s untouchable. Past and certainly not present. I wanted this promo to last at least til the end of the show, if not forever. It was so, so good. The downside is that whenever Rocky does come back, it’s bitter sweet as it really shows us what we’re missing these days.

Royal Rumble 2016 [Review]

After the past two years of awful booking, terrible reactions and fan backlashes WWE have finally gotten the Royal Rumble match right again.  The matches were good throughout the night with a well booked show from start to finish. The tag team match and Intercontinental Championship street fight stood out in particular from in the early bouts.

royal-rumble-2016-logoThe Rumble itself was vastly improved with eliminations making sense, setting up potential future feuds for Wrestlemania and beyond. Fan favourite eliminations didn’t meet the same backlash as last year as a result. The Royal Rumble event tends to attract a ‘smark’ crowd and that showed with their reactions to Roman Reigns, the longer the event lasted the less patience they had for him. Definitely a mixed reaction but nowhere near the universal rejection he received last year. It will be interesting to see the reactions he continues to get the closer we get to Wrestlemania itself.

Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose defeats Kevin Owens

tumblr_o1hp02jfv51v5ue77o2_400When I was watching the match live I thought it felt rushed. Trying to fit in as many spots as they could. Having watched it again I feel like it’s pacing is better than I first thought and that they actually have plenty of time, but something is still slightly off for me. Maybe it was the finish? Overall I thought the match was good, but not great and that it had some cool spots but not enough story to end the feud. Maybe it will continue?

I continue to love everything Kevin Owens does, his constant trash talking to his opponents and the way he treats Micheal Cole is hilarious.

Tag Team Champions The New Day defeat The Usos

tumblr_o1hjcfk0oo1rofocqo1_400This is my personal match of the night. The promo that The New Day cut before the match is so top draw. The return of Xavier Wood and a trombone is a truly joyous occasion. The match itself is awesome, though you’d expect it to be after the amount of times these two teams have fought each other now. Big E is particularly impressive. His catch for the Big Ending was amazing, but my props go to the camera work and editing team who kept his return into the ring a surprise. I moan about Kevin Dunn’s work a lot but that was some quality work.

Kalisto defeats Alberto Del Rio to become the new US Champion

surprise of the night, didnt see kalisto winning the title back again. cant really remember that much of the match in honesty, was getting a little tipsy at this point

Didn’t remember much about this match in honesty other than the surprise of del Rio losing. Rewatched it today but struggled to find much interest in honesty. Don’t care about either man that much. Stuff hard hitting, most from del Rio. A really ugly botch is the most memorable moment. A number of rope breaks, which is nice. Turnbuckle spots have started to make a come back recently, muchly missed.

Divas Champion Charlotte defeated Becky Lynch

145_rr_01242016jg_0820-2891719582This was a solid match between two talented women. Nothing in it is going your world but it was suitable. Perhaps more importantly it didn’t do anymore damage to the ‘divas revolution’ that has gone so poorly.

Becky Lynch continues to be an incredible dumb babyface. Apparently in WWEs eyes to be a good guy you have to have no common sense. Why did Becky break her submission hold when Ric Flair threw his sports coat at her, it literally changed nothing in her ability to perform the move. Keep it locked in, win the title and then get rid of the coat! Stop being so easily distracted. Also that kiss Ric gave to Becky was creepy as hell, he should be arrested!

Sasha Banks came out to a huge ovation after the match. That girl is over with the crowd. After seemingly siding with Charlotte over Becky, she locks in the bank statement much to the delight of the fans. I’m thinking WWE will go for a triple threat match at Wrestlemania with the NXT women or maybe a fatal four way with Paige as well. Either way, it should be awesome.

Royal Rumble Match

That was both mine and a lot of peoples general thoughts going into the 2016 Royal Rumble match. It was frustrating having everything focused around him when there are 29 other competitors. In typical WWE fashion though all the story lines, all the adverts were about Roman Reigns. Even Brock Lesnar barely got a mention!

180_rr_01242016rf_0266-2938641063I didn’t want to believe in a 2016 Triple H title run but there I was cheering for him, the heel, or the babyface Roman Reigns. Anyone but Reigns though. Awkwardly the boos for Roman returned on Monday when he speared Brock Lesnar and they were present again last night too.

Despite the build only focusing on one man, the match itself created plenty of potential matches and feuds going forward. Which is great to see. With Chris Jericho/Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens/Sami Zayn, Triple H/Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar/Bray Wyatt there’s plenty to look forward to for Wrestlemania 32.

tumblr_o1huvxtg2f1t1bfpho1_500Moment of the night must be the debut of AJ Styles, the reaction he received was deafening. Vince McMahon must have been pleased with that. I would have liked to see more offence from him during his 30 minute outing. Instead he was always the first guy up to get knocked down by a new entrant, but as we all know, AJ can sell like the best of them. The fans chanted his name loudly through out the match, even after he was eliminated. A good first night on the job.

Other thoughts and higlights from the Rumble match:

  • A mixed reaction for Roman Reigns. Will he get booed at Wrestlemania for a second year in a row? I think he might.
  • Seeing Rusev jobbed out and first eliminated is extremely disappointing. How the might have fallen.
  • R Truth’s ladder spot was hilarious. I really like his character and little skits he’s been given at the moment.
  • In a rare moment of continuity with the WWE, Kevin Owens enters the Rumble still selling his injuries from his match earlier in the night. There’s a big pop for him verses AJ Styles as well, which was cool.
  • Michael Cole, clearly impressed by Owens, reminds the audience about the falling out Chris Jericho and Dean Ambrose had last year. Something Roman Reigns had clearly forgotten on Raw a few weeks ago. Continuity overload!
  • Sami Zayn Vs Kevin Owens is a must do feud. Simple as that.
  • Brock Lesnar does what Brock Lesnar does best. Dominate. After eliminating Rowan, Harper and Strowman, Bray Wyatt enters and the four of them eventually eliminate Lesnar. Who, unfortunately doesn’t kill them all in revenge.
  • Triple H had me convicned several times that he had been eliminated. Some really good stuff, especially the Dolph Ziggler superkick.
  • The fans love Reigns being eliminated as suddenly they weren’t quite sure what was going to happen. It was smart booking having Ambrose and Triple H as the final two instead of Roman and Triple H. Dean Ambrose is a fan favourite so it avoided the cheering of a heel and the booing of the babyface that would have happened.
