WWE have given us an early Christmas present. A Super Smackdown Live! I’ve always said that I would start watching Smackdown again under two conditions. It’s either live like Raw or at the very least it’s made to be just as important as Raw like it was back in the day! Well, one out of two aint bad for now I guess!

I honestly don’t think I’ve watched Smackdown all year, which is a damn shame as it use to be my favourite show. That was a long time ago now though, back before Brock Lesnar left for UFC.

Anyway, what did this Super Smackdown bring us? Was it naughty or nice? Will I or the WWE be able to stop referencing Christmas? Keep reading to find out that and more!

Overall I didn’t think it was a bad show it flew by at only two hours long. A third hour would have been too much though. Not as many Raw recaps as I was expecting, in fact I cant recall anything in video package form. Only the announcers explaining reasons for matches. Good stuff.

It does feel somewhat like Raw-lite however. Imagine removing the hour they spend on the main event story lines and that leaves you with this Smackdown. With no real story progression made it does just add to the over exposure to stars and their feuds. For example how many more times are you going to want to see The Dudley’s Vs The Wyatts?

The Good

003_sd_12222015ej_1028-605275980The opening match between the Lucha Dragons and The New Day was as entertaining as you would expect. Lucha Dragons are doing well right now and The New Day are always fun.

We get a fun promo from Dean Ambrose with Renee Young. He talks about his cage match from Raw against Sheamus, the superkick he got from Dolph Ziggler the week before and his upcoming title defence against Ziggler and Kevin Owens. Its the usual crazy shtick from Ambrose and it works well again.

We barely see Roman Reigns all show. He only comes out to save The Uso’s from the League of Nations (more on that later). Great use of Reigns on Smackdown. Firstly he didn’t cut a promo which is a great thing as he’s not very good at them. Secondly I’m a firm believer that over exposure is one of the main things ruining wrestling so keeping your main event talent special is very important. They shouldn’t wrestle every show, hell sometimes they shouldn’t even be on at all! They can’t all be Brock Lesnar, but there is a happy medium I feel.

Another promo with Renee Young this time from Dolph Ziggler. He’s stressing again about hows he’s never truly made it as far as he wanted. Or that he’s never been the guy. Good character development and continues to sow the seeds for next year. The realism of what he’s saying will make the story telling stronger. I’m hoping for big things.

089_sd_12222015sb_1575-3148091278I forgot that Stardust and The Ascension do more on Smackdown than they do on Raw.  Stardust tries to ruin Christmas by stealing a star from Santino’s tree and trashing his party. This brings out Neville and Titus O’Neil to save the day. A match is schedule for later on for which The Ascension get no entrance like the jobbers they are. This is the main Christmas angle of the night. Normally I’d hate this cheesey Christmas nonsense but seen as this is Smackdown and not Raw I’ll let it slide.

It’s a fun match which obviously Neville and O’Neil win. The highlight being from Santino who at one point was surrounded by Stardust and company. He pulled out the cobra but oculd put it on from fear of attack, so ended up using it as a handkerchief to dab his brow. I’d forgotten how fun Santino was. That said, if I saw this on Raw I would be fuming!

The Bad

The crowd were exactly what you expect from a Smackdown live event and by that I mean not very lively. They perked up once in a while for example they loved Ryback’s ‘Feed Me More’. I can’t wait to watch the highlights later with everyone receiving huge pops or massive boos.

052_sd_12222015ej_1757-384231164Dudley’s Vs Wyatt’s again. I think this is roughly the 3021st match between the groups since their feud started. Talk about beating a dead horse. It should have ended last week on Raw when The Wyatts won the street fight, but no. We saw it on Raw and Smackdown again this week! Over saturation and over exposure once again.

The twist this time is that not only has Rhyno disappeared so has Tommy Dreamer, who refuses to work Tuesdays because he takes piano lessons or something. What? I’m not lying! They didn’t mention it so I’m just assuming why he wasn’t there. Instead we get ‘Demon’ Kane and Ryback teaming up with The Dudley’s. This match reeks of Smackdown B show. A pointless match that means nothing with no consequences, no story progression. Predictably the Wyatt’s won again. Why even bother?

Alberto Del Rio and Rusev of the League of Nations took on The Uso’s. I honestly couldn’t tell you whihc Uso is which. Does that make me racist? It’s not my fault every Uso looks alike!

The League of Nations win because they have that ability whenever Roman Reigns isn’t around. They’re about to do a post match beat down when suddenly Roman Reigns turns up after all and single handedly destroys them. Honestly guys, The League of Nations are not a threat to Reigns in anyway, shape or form. When they try and tell you otherwise don’t believe the lies!

110_sd_12222015sb_1829-2449549167Brie Bella Vs Charlotte. The whole match is ignored as the commentary team focus on Becky Lynch who is with them. They talk about how she feels about Charlotte cheating and her morals etc. Team B.A.D come out pretty quickly to pour eggnog Lynch who fights back but the numbers game is too much. Meanwhile Charlotte watches all of the unfold, doesn’t help in anyway and wins the match. Charlotte then celebrates while Becky is humiliated.

That’s all fine and dandy I just have one question. Does anyone buy this ‘we’re best friends forever’ bullshit that WWE keep harping on about? I don’t. After all, when was it established that they are such good friends? They didn’t do it on NXT thats for sure and while they’ve said it a lot since the call up to the main roster, it’s never once looked convincing.

On the plus side at least theres some semblance of a storyline going on between the two of them. Which is better than the rest of the divas!

The Ugly

wzpqmtstDuring the main event Dean Ambrose took a suplex from Kevin Owens and landed right on the top of his head. It was an awful landing and looked really painful. Brutal, obviously they showed it 55 times in slow motion. I’m amazed how quickly Dean shook it off to be honest. Maybe he’s just  a really lucky man? If I don’t read a report about him having a concussion tomorrow I’ll be amazed though.
