San Andreas [Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down?]

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down – Keeping film reviews short, to the point and most importantly SPOILER FREE! Keep it simple. Would you recommend this film or not?

The largest recorded earthquake in history is triggered by California’s San Andreas fault. While everything is going to hell Ray Gaines (Dwayne Johnson), an LAFD search-and-rescue helicopter pilot must rescue his estranged wife (Carla Gugino) and their only daughter (Alexandra Daddario).

I’m willing to bet that theres only two reasons why you saw this movie. One, you love watching millions of CGI people die in massive disaster scenarios. Or Two, you’re a fan of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and lets be honest for a second, wrestling fan or not, you like The Rock.

In reality no one is sitting watching this film thinking ‘boy, Chief Raymond “Ray” Gaines sure is an interesting character I hope you does alright’. No. You’re sitting there happily accepting the fact that for some reason The Rock is now a helicopter rescue pilot and he’s off to give a people’s elbow to an earthquake. Dwayne Johnson doesn’t need to be a great actor, people pay to see The Rock. Not that I’m saying he’s a bad actor though!

san-andreas-movie-2015-art-parkinson-alexandra-daddario-hugo-johnstone-burtYes it’s a basic premise for a disaster movie, but it’s done better here than in The Day After Tomorrow and 2012. After all The Day After Tomorrow was bleh and 2012 was just dumb. Like, really dumb.

Listen, this movie is exactly what you think it’s going to be. A big fun disaster movie that will focus on The Rock, his hot ex wife, their insanely hot daughter and two bumbling British brothers while more or less ignoring the death count that will be heavily into the millions. You’ll already know if this is your type of flick. If it is, get it on dvd/blu ray. If it’s not, don’t worry about it.

Verdict: Thumbs Up (its only a dumb disaster movie though)
