Four Year Strong – Four Year Strong [Review]

Four Year Strong are an American pop punk/melodic hardcore band from Worcester, Massachusetts, formed in 2001. Which is a bit of a mouthful when you have to say it out loud. Below you can listen to the opening track from their recent self-titled album ‘I Hold Myself In Contempt‘.

I had been waiting for this album for four years. Since the release of 2011’s In Some Way, Shape or Form I had been eagerly awaiting Four Years Strong’s next full LP offering. The band got my taste buds going with their 2014 EP Go Down In History, which indicated a ‘return to form’ for the band who many of their fans said had lost their way with the previous effort.

four_year_strong_promo_2015Here’s the thing though. I absolutely loved In Some Way, Shape or Form. I think its fantastic and is definitely my favourite album the band have produced. Now I am aware that I’m in the minority with that statement however. As most fans rejected the more straight forward rock sound, hence why it’s taken four years for their next major release. To me it felt like a natural progression in a band maturing but hey ho! I just wanted to show it some much needed love because while it might not have been what the ‘fans’ wanted it’s still an absolute corker of an album!

So now you know where I stand with my previous Four Year Strong tastes, take from that what you will. You either think that I’m an idiot or a genius I suppose? Music will do that to people. So what do I think this time?

The new album is hard hitting and frantically paced crafted by some truly talented musicians. It’s a great listen and I think this album is great. The guitar rifts, the vocal melodies, the drumming. I love it. I’ve been signing the guitar solo in ‘I Hold Myself In Contempt‘ [3:30 onwards] for months now!

If for whatever reason you moved away from this band I urge you to give this album and the Go Down In History EP a listen too. Then after you’ve done that go and listen to In Some Way, Shape or Form again because while its different from the synth heavy music before it. It’s amazing!
